Everton: Demarai Grey scores in debut at Florida Cup

Demarai Gray scored on his first Everton appearance as fellow new arrival Asmir Begovic proved the hero in a 10-9 penalty shootout victory over Millonarios in the Florida Cup.

Winger Gray, 25, joined Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday for PS1.7m. He converted a 64th-minute spot-kick in order to cancel Andres Llinas’ opener. Former Bournemouth goalkeeper Begovic, 34, scored before saving Juan Moreno's strike to seal victory in the shootout. Andros Townsend also made his debut. Gray replaced Everton in Orlando for the second half. The 30-year old joined Everton on a free transfer after his contract with Crystal Palace expired. Both sides had missed just once in the shootout when Begovic, who also saved from Ricardo Marquez, struck down the middle to make it 10-9 - and then denied the Millonarios goalkeeper. "He is a keeper with a lot of experience. Rafael Benitez, manager of Begovic, stated that we were searching for Jordan Pickford's type of competition. It's a positive thing for him, and it's a positive thing for us. " Benitez commented on Gray's performance and said: "He was a player I had been following for a while. He is a skilled player and must be consistent. That's what he knows. It was a position that I wanted to test his ability in, as he did. " Everton will play Club Universidad Nacional in Mexico on Wednesday. The friendly away to Manchester United is scheduled for 7 August.
